Oil was discovered in Burkbennet in 1912, swelling the town’s population to over 20,000. This part of the city’s history is chronicled in the movie Boom town with Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy. Though the boom eventually receeded, the city’s economy was stimulated again in the 1940’s when Sheppard Air Force Base was established in the area.
